Raziel - Soul Reaver

Due to an un-announced collapsed lung, I have had some free time these past few days. I saw this as a good opportunity to get my head in Photoshop and practise my digital arts.

As a lot of you know, I'm a video game nerd. I have been since I was a tiddler. My all-time favourite video game character being Raziel from the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver series. I decided, now my skills are good enough to do him justice, that I would create some fan art with the aim of creating a well-known character and injecting it with my own style of art.

Raziel: The Soul Reaver..

I started with a simple sketch. I used a reference image from the net.
I tried to keep my sketch loose so that I could re-shape the design in this next step. This is the stage that allows me to form Raziel in my own style. I wanted to keep the big low-poly look hair from the game, but make it more trendy. I also wanted to emphasise the claws on his hands and feet. I gave it a sprinkle of artistic licence.

Now that the block colours and base image were in place I was able to zoom in on the design and start adding the details and shadows. This is a painstakingly long process, but really makes the image pop from the page. This stage pulls the image from flat, to giving the impression of form and weight.

The image was coming along nicely. But, I still felt that it was a bit too flat and I had some detail elements missing. In my mind the light was coming from the front/right. So, to accompany the shadows, I added some highlights to Raziel. Again reinforcing the suggestion of light. I finally finished drawing the spear-thing.

I thought I was done. Then, realised that I had completely forgotten Raziels wings. Here I changed his original design. Raziel has very torn wings, which look like large flaps of skin. But, I didn't want the wings to take any attention away from the figure. Again I used artistic license and changed his wings for a split cape. I decided to add the Reaver energy to his arm as well to give him the more iconic look. The textures were added in this stage to make him more stylish.

Raziel was complete. But, a character on white would have been a bit boring. When adding a background I wanted to keep it minimal enough that Raziel was the focus and I wanted to keep it eerie like the game was. I went for a damp, foggy day and incorporated the tentacles in the background to suggest dark creatures in the wild. I used a tentacle as a nod to the strange creature (can't remember its name) that Raziel first met in the underworld. It was placed far right to keep the picture nicely weighted.

I was sat at home today after a photoshoot got cancelled. The last thing I wanted to do was waste the day. After all, I had booked it off from work. So, I took a little walk with my camera and got quite a nice shot down by the harbour. On returning home got the graphics tablet out and got busy on some digital art. I've always enjoyed drawing on photos. So, here's todays offering..

I've got a new photo series underway. I'm trying to combine my photography, illustration and graphic design in one composition. Here's the first two images and I have a few more, slightly unusual, images for the series underway.

If you have been following my blog for a while, then you'll know that I have an urge to launch a T-shirt brand. When I was creating this first image I had my own brand in mind. I would add a bit of text explaining what we sell, then this is the image I would use as part of my marketing campaign.

King of Plymouth 2011

Yesterday was the King of Plymouth 2011. A day of breakdancing, battle DJ's, funky live music, dance crews and friendly competition. It was a sick event and you would be a fool to miss it next year. As usual I took my camera, but didn't get too snap happy with the photos as I was too interested in watching the B-Boys.

I am fascinated by mainstream media's digital retouching of fashion and lifestyle imagery. The need to create a perfect image of a human being for mass consumerism to desire. Individuality is not important. Conformity is essential. If we do not become this perfect image, then we should not be accepted into society. I have taken it upon myself to clean up photographs of individuals that I meet and remove any imperfections from their image. The numeric values for these people have been presented for you. This will allow us to conform more easily in the future.

I like to take photos in urban places. I like the hard lines and man-made textures. I feel like I have more control of my images in the city. While walking around the woods today I found it difficult to find an image that touched me. Nature is pretty, but scruffy. It's my photographers OCD, having to keep images clean and tidy. I didn't take many pictures. About twenty. But, while reviewing them I found these two to be the most interesting.

Just spent the weekend at Relentless Boardmasters 2011 at Watergate Bay, Newquay. It was a great time and the first year that I have taken a camera. As you have probably seen from my work I have a fascination with people. So, in-between snaps of friends getting extremely drunk, I decided to grab some photos of the more interesting characters in the crowd. Sun down over the Badlands

Its very rare that I get the opportunity to visit the north coast during sundown. So, it was nice to be able to do a little sunset photography for once. I took a few shots of just the coastline and sky, but the shots felt a little loose. They had no real emotion, or focus. The moment I put a subject in shot the images started to come alive. I wanted to get the positioning just right to create the epic scale of where we were stood and what was happening.

Dave LaChapelle vs Rihanna [S&M video]

The reason I'm blogging about this is because as a visual artist I feel quite strongly about what is happening and also see a possible problem arising in the future for all visual artists.

So, this seems to be pretty hot news right now. The story is that Dave LaChapelle is suing Rihanna, or perhaps her video director [Melina Matsoukas], for infringement of copyright over her music video S&M [see below]. The story is that Rihanna's video very closely imitates LaChapelles work to the point of theft. He is currently in a court battle with her [representatives] to the sum of $1million.

There is no argument. Rihanna's video is obviously inspired by LaChapelles work to the point of imitation. But, I don't see a huge problem with this. It's fairly unethical of Melina Matsoukas to imitate LaChapelles work and not credit him [As a video artist herself, she should know better] But, I can't see how it is illegal. The video does not use any of LaChapelles personal work. It has clearly been created by different people. Different sets have been used, different models, different angles, different fashion. The video director has stolen ideas and concepts. But, since when could we copyright ideas?

"Copyright does not protect ideas, concepts, systems, or methods of doing something. You may express your ideas in writing or drawings and claim copyright in your description, but be aware that copyright will not protect the idea itself as revealed in your written or artistic work." - U.S. Copyright Office

Apparently LaChapelle has been pushing his case with the notion that his work has been sampled. Music laws are in place which prevent the duplication of other musicians work to use as your own without prior consent. This is great. But, I can't see how his work has been sampled either. None of his material has been sampled in the Rihanna video. Only recreated by other artists. It all seems to me like LaChapelle is pushing his luck a bit. He is obviously upset that his work has been imitated to benefit other peoples bank accounts.

If he wins this court case, it could mean that artists will no longer be able to recreate, imitate, or express inspiration from other artists work. How many times this season have you seen a photograph of a model stood in a hayfield, or holding a balloon? Should the photographer who came up with the original concept sue them all? What about all the television commercials that imitate youtube videos? How about if I draw the village people? Could they then sue me? Will fan art, or caricature, die completely?

Andy Warhol drew Campbells tomato soup. Should he have been sued for it?

For what it's worth, The video ain't all dat. It's a pretty average music video and doesn't deserve all the attention it's getting. This whole thing makes me wonder if its a publicity stunt on behalf of LaChapelle, Rihanna, or both.

This week I have been working with Tommy Stone a Mixed Martial Artist from Exeter, UK. Having met only briefly in the past Tommy had mentioned needing some promo photos done to keep his sponsors happy. I stepped in to help. We met a few days ago and spent a few hours shooting out n about in my hometown. Tommy turned out to be a really nice guy, we had a good laugh and he was a pleasure to work with. Since then I have been selecting a few images that I think would work well to help promote Tommy and have also been working on a more creative piece which leaves space to showcase Tommy's sponsors.

Freerunner: concept script

*Blog readers, this post is for the people of Deep Blue Sound studio*

The idea for the piece is to capture a moment in time and the emotions that come with it. The weather/sky and music will express the emotion of each set piece. Each time the weather and mood of the runner changes, so must the music.

*SCRIPT*

The main character is a free runner. He is standing alone on top of a vast, serene cityscape. The sun is melting down behind the city and a gentle wind is blowing. The free runner stands still and alone at one edge of a huge gap. He is considering his chances of making a jump from one building to another. He stares at the adjacent building. His eyes follow the building all the way down to the ground. The situation looks bleak. It’s a long way down!

The sky clouds over as the free runner leans his body and turns around dismayed. As he unnervingly makes is way back across the rooftop a sudden feeling of determination comes across him. The sky changes to a thunderous red and the wind picks up. His body snaps around to face the vast gap. He turns with such force and determination that the birds, who had been nestling on the edge, fly off in fear. The runner drops down to one knee, his focus firmly on the challenge ahead of him. The sun beats down hard on him as he poises himself for what could be the biggest moment of his life. Suddenly, in the space of a blink, he is gone. Sprinting with such power and focus everything else around him seems to fade out. For this brief moment of time the runner is very, very alone. He plants his foot firmly on the edge of the building and uses every once of energy in him to propel his body across the ravine. Gracefully he drifts through the air as if he has done it a million times before. His form is perfect. The sky is clear and bright. It feels like such an amazing moment, he feels like an eagle soaring through the skies.

“So, this is what flying feels like” He thinks to himself as he drifts across the sky.

Suddenly, before he even knows it, the runner lands hard on the rooftop of the adjacent building. Its not a graceful landing and he tumbles hard trying to find which way is up. Moments later he is laying on his back gazing at the sky with a feeling of complete euphoria flowing through his body. The sunset is once again beating down on his body. As the runner lies there gazing into nothingness a bird glides past his field of vision. The runner smiles understanding how the bird feels.

Gut feeling

You know when you get a gut feeling that things aren't going right and you need to do something about it? yeah? well, i got one of those. My final major project that i have been fine tweaking for months wasn't working for me [even though everybody else seemed to think it was] so, i have canned the idea and started again. This hasn't left me too much time, but its sumthin i hafta do. So, im starting again. today i have taught myself a little 3D to get this project done and heres a concept screen of how i hope my final project to look. Anybody who has been following my work could probably guess what i'm going to do. wish me luck ;)

Last life art :(

Well, today was my last scheduled life art session on my college course. I'm feelin pretty gutted about this because I was starting to really get into it. Next year I think im going to ask around and see if anybody minds me sitting in on their classes. Anyway, today I had a go at drawing from my graphics tablet straight into Adobe Illustrator. Once again the time limits were pretty tight, so the images aren't really finished pieces. They are as much information as I could get in with the time limit set...
